sweet 16!

my little sister turned 16 this year!! makes me feel so old!

my mom rented out a hall and we threw her a sweet 16! 16 year olds are pretty easy to please.  we hired a dj and ordered pizza and put up a few decorations - the hall didnt let us hang anything so it wasn't as decorated as we had planned :(

i went through my mom's boxes and boxes of pictures and narrowed down the cutest and most embarrassing to just enough to fit on 2 boards:

this was my first attempt at a fondant covered cake....

you learn as you go and try really hard not to get frustrated

our theme was obviously black and pink...

and sweet. my mom covered hershey bars with patterned scrap book paper, cut out ;sweet 16' on her cricut and used Stickles to make them sparkly

i really wanted a candy buffet for our wedding but it was way too expensive, so i settled for a much smaller scale one for her party.  it's really hard to find black and pink candy! it turned into my obesession for 2 weeks before the party! we ended up using m&m's, dots, good & plenty, sixlets, licorice bites, rock candy, and gum balls

the birthday girl!:

we're pregnant!!

soo we had only been married for 5 weeks and 2 days and  found out we were 4 weeks and 1 day pregnant!!

i wish i had a picture of the look on rich's face....he was soo surprised! a good surprise!

we are now safely through the first trimester and soo excited!!  our due date is 5/23/11....it'll be here before we know it!

refinishing the harwoods!

we decided that since we're expecting our first baby now, we should get moving on the list of home improvements we've been making since we moved in in october 2009.

first on the list was our hardwood floors.  we ripped up the carpet a few months ago because our crazy (but adorable) dog ripped a hole in the middle of it -from her cage! so we lived with all those ugly old stains on the hardwoods for a few months.

before:

soo many spots....

we rented a random orbit sander from home depot ($45 for 4 hours + sand paper-take home more than you think you'll need, they won't charge you for what you bring back unused) and sanded away any old finish that was on there:

it took 3 different sandpapers: 24, 40, and 80 grain

the random orbit didnt get all the way to the wall so we had to go around with a hand sander too:

this is how we lived for 6 days....everything but the couches were in the kitchen,  thank goodness for my mama's dinners all week!

we obviously weren't getting any cooking done!

this is after it was all sanded and ready for the next step.  looks better already:

there was so much dust in the air-you can see it in the picture! i was finally allowed to "help" and i got to clean the floors before he stained them

he is ALL ready to stain!

i was only allowed to stay to see the test spot then i had to leave for the day (not good for the 6 week old fetus!-but nice relaxing day on my parent's couch!)

the stain had to go on in small sections and then wiped off after about 5 minutes-longer if you want it to be darker.

looking good! it ended up perfectly matching the baseboards

all done-from the kitchen:

after the stain dried overnight we sanded it with 220 grit sandpaper to make the polyurethane stick.  three coats of poly, one a night, and our floors were finally done!

total cost: around $150 (max!)
$100 for sander and pads
$30-50 for other supplies (some we already had, like the hand sander)

total time:  8 hours of actual labor, 6 days total with drying time
1 hour to sand
5 hours to stain (we really underestimated that-thought it would take an hour and he'd be done in time for the football game, not so much!)
about 20 minutes a night per coat of poly

lessons learned:
1. listen to your wife and don't drag the heavy floor sander up the steps; it's really heavy and you'll end up fixing the deck steps next!
2.  you don't have to apply the stain with a brush; you can use an attachment on an extender so it's not so bad on your back and knees.
3.  even though it smells worse, use oil based primer. we used water based because the smell wasn't as bad since i was pregnant and our floor scratches easier than it should (like when the dog slides across i and stops herself with her nails....)

this wasn't a difficult or expensive project and it totally changed the look of our room! we love it so much we're planning to do it again in the nursery!

the honeymoon!

so our honeymoon was a last minute decision.  we were originally going to just stay local and have a low-key week together and go on a cruise in april 2011.   a few weeks before the wedding we decided we really wanted to go away and looked into florida beaches but couldn't afford much.

the same day i went to pick up my dress (where i decided i no longer LOVED it and the awesome manager let me exchange it!) a family friend called and saved our honeymoon!! she got us a hotel room for the week, so all we had to do was get there and we'd have our honeymoon!

we decided to go pompano beach, fl, we flew out on Monday after the wedding and stayed right on the beach.

on the plane.

first lesson learned: the 7am flight to orlando, fl is full of screaming children because Disneyworld is in orlando....we didn't think that one through very well at all....

after a 3 hour layover...we made it to pompano!

our room!

we learned our second lesson of the week on our first night. be sure to research the area because not every beach is like ocean city, md! we couldn't walk anywhere (well within reasonable distance) and we didn't rent a car since we're used to being in a resort area when we go to the beach.

the only happy picture of the first night. after this we ate the gross buffet at the casino, lost $80, and then attempted to go back to the hotel.  we took a cab to the casino which ended up costing $30 so we didn't want to spend that much to get back.  wonderful new husband decided we could just jump on (any) bus and get back. not so much. we ended up on 2 wrong buses, in a run down neighborhood, and then we met Charlie!  Charlie was the nice man that told us how to walk the mile back to our hotel just before offering us a bag of weed to celebrate with...thanks but no thanks....

wonderful husband again decided not to listen to Charlie and we went our own way.  Florida has little lakes in between their streets so you can't cross over them everywhere. we ended up having to call a friend at home to pull up a map and get us back to the hotel! it was 1130 pm, raining, we had no clue where we were, and ended up walking a total of 5 miles that night!

needless to say....we rented a car the next day!

first half of the week was soo windy...

view from our balcony

down the beach a little bit.  i wanted so bad to walk out on that pier but you can't...

the Everglades tour was probably one of our favorite parts of the week.  we went on an airboat and saw 3 gators!

and it was so pretty....

then we drove to Miami and went to South Beach. its soo pretty there but soo hot in August!

our last day...so pretty...

we took the dress and had a last minute photo shoot.

plane home....even with our first night adventure, we had a blast and relaxed a lot!

our big day!

we waited SO long for our wedding day to finally come. dated for over 6 years and were engaged for 2 of them before the day finally arrived.

we got married at our church, St Bonaventure and had our reception at the gorgeous Twelve Oaks Mansion in Mars, PA.

we had a BLAST and enjoyed every minute of the day!  it was well worth every penny and every minute spent on it.

we played our version of the newlywed game and of course we won!!

first dance! jimmy wayne's "you are"

maid of honor and best man!

goin for the garter....totally surprised me. the dj surprised us with the theme song from Mission Impossible so Rich just went with it!
cutting the cake to  "pour some sugar on me" (we like to be different!) and he was NOT shoving it in my face...

we didn't want the day to be over but it really was a perfect day! nothing went wrong and we had amazing weather!
